RŪTA PŪCE

Rūta Pūce (1989) is a latvian freelance contemporary dance artist. Her work focuses on the body as a material and a site of research, placing great emphasis on bodily experiences—sensations, memories, and preserved moments that leave their mark on human habits and choices.

“I approach the body as an archive. It helps me to overcome binary thinking and not separating body from mind, dance from choreography and art from life. I can be analytical and creative, mother and non-mother, ready to fight and preach peace at the same time, because all of it is within me and my body.”

Puce made her debut in the professional contemporary dance industry with the contemporary dance show “Twoness" (2017), which explores the role of a woman-mother in society (Choreography: Rūta Pūce and Anna Novikova). The solo "Until Death Do Us Part" (2023) examines the relationship between a person and their body in the context of society's gaze, the contemporary dance performance “Entrails” (2024, Ģertrudes Street Theater) uses the body as an archive in the artistic research to talk about the Latvian contemporary dance industry.

Puce works in the Contemporary Dance Department at the Riga Ballet School and  as an editor for a dance magazine "Dance.lv". She is a member of The Choreographers Association and LAUKKU.
